Magnolia Figo
Banana Shrub

by Hazel Bost Cangialosi
Magnolia figo, the banana magnolia or banana shrub, is a compact tree that blooms in mid-to-late spring. The flowers, small, cup shaped, and ranging from yellow to white and pink, smell strongly of banana. Originally from southeast China, this shrub is well suited to our warm temperate climate and thrives in the Piedmont without becoming aggressive or invasive, and can withstand full sun though it prefers partial shade. It even displays some salt tolerance, making it a viable choice for coastal gardens. They can be viewed on our Patio Terrace or at the end of the Hornbeam Walk, tucked against the high boxwood hedge.
